Director of Taxation – MEA has overall responsibility for the management of MEA’s Corporate and Indirect tax compliance, including the management of a team of specialists to ensure compliance in all of MEA’s legal entities as it relates to taxation. The role also partners with the current Continent resources to ensure Payroll tax compliance.
The role provides support and advice on tax due diligence and related structuring to the Corporate Research & Planning group, in conjunction with the Corporate Tax team, on all MEA projects through various work streams.
Responsibilities include coordination, preparation and filing of tax returns for entities incorporated in the Continent. In addition, this position will be a key contributor in efforts to improve and create processes that ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial information for Marriott’s subsidiaries. The Director of Tax works with significant independence, but within established guidelines, producing and analyzing financial information as well as legal contracts to support the subsidiaries. In addition, he/she will serve as a key point-of-contact for stakeholders across the organization.
Scope/Business Context
• In conjunction with the Corporate Research & Planning group, identify, develop and communicate planning strategies for optimization of the group’s MEA tax position, including the utilisation of NOL’s.
• Work closely with the business to understand key strategic and commercial drivers for the business and assess the tax consequences of new projects, countries or transactions.
• Support the Corporate Research & Planning group by providing practical advice to the finance business partners, development asset management teams and other key Continent stakeholders on the tax impact of specific business transactions and actively project manage as required.
• Support Marriott’s Corporate office and US Tax Teams in tax planning and structuring/restructuring projects, assisting in explaining issues, ideas and plans to MEA’s business partners.
• Ensure the accurate and timely completion of all local income tax returns and the electronic transmission of key tax return data from the tax advisors to the SharePoint site maintained by Corporate Headquarters.
• Advise and take responsibility for all other taxation issues for the group, including indirect and employee tax compliance.
• Assist in managing outside professional fee budget and reporting to Corporate Tax on this activity in compliance with US reporting requirements under Sarbanes Oxley rules.
• Develop and manage relationships with external tax advisors, tax related governmental authorities, internal data and information sources, and internal customers
• In conjunction with Corporate Income Tax Audit Group, take the lead in managing the relationship with tax related governmental authorities.
• Develop and build a strong relationship with the US tax provision team in partnership with the Corporate Non-US Compliance leadership team, working towards a better understanding of the process and implementing process improvements within MEA for quarterly tax deliverables.
• Responsible for ensuring that robust processes and controls are maintained in respect of all areas of taxation and helping coordinate governance framework for the Corporate Tax department, the UK Senior Accounting Officer regime and new local country requirements as they are introduced.
• Manage a team of finance and tax professionals, prioritize projects and workload of the team and its individual members, and establish deadlines around those priorities.
• Ensure the timely and accurate completion of all income tax accounting deliverables including, but not limited to, general ledger tax account reconciliations, US ASC 740 deferred reconciliations for both local and US GAAP book to tax differences, local financial statement provision analyses, return to provision analyses, separate company tax balance sheets and the maintenance and accurate application of withholding tax rates.
• Responsible for ensuring timely and accurate completion of all monthly, quarterly and annual reporting responsibilities to Corporate Headquarters as provided in the Governance deliverables for Local Tax Returns/Tax Payments
• Provide support and expertize related to above-property and shared service activities/initiatives.
• Support Senior Director of Finance Administration MEA and Finance Director for Protea, as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Candidate Profile
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in Tax and Accounting
• Knowledge of GAAP and IFRS
• Knowledge of overall hotel operations and accounting principles
• Demonstration of broader finance and accounting skills outside of the taxation
• Comprehensive knowledge of structure and purpose of Marriott entities
• Ability to collect, analyze, and evaluate facts and to prepare and present concise oral and written reports
• Knowledge of Peoplesoft, Fidelio, Micros and additional systems used in the hotels preferred
• Ability to establish and retain effective working relationships with external agencies, hotel management and associates
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
• An ability to work unsupervised and manage time efficiently
Education or Certification
• Qualified Tax Accountant, Certified Public Accountancy certification and/or advanced degree in tax, or local country equivalent
